After reached Luino, on the Lombardy side of Lago Maggiore, take the road that goes up to the village of Dumenza and then, almost narrow, continues through Due Cossani and Curiglia. From here a descent with turns leads to the parking site on the creek Viascola a few far away from the village of Piero.

Introduction

It is a short and easy excursion which has a big historical and environmental interest. It happens on an old track all made of steps, perfectly preserved which, until some years ago, was the only access road to Monteviasco. The itinerary on this track, despite the construction of a small cable car, is strictly recommended especially for the interest of this man's opera with more than one thousand steps ...

Descrizione

At the end of the road at the small group of houses of Piero (I recommended to take a brief tour of this village, just a few minutes continuing past the creek), follow the signs for Monteviasco and start the ascent along a mule track, steep but not tiring, thanks to perfect path that goes back a very scenic wooded coast, especially in autumn when the temperature is bearable (it is very hot in summer) and the ground is literally strewn with fallen chestnuts from old trees of the forest. Until a few years ago, this trail was the only access road to the village, then a small cable car was built to make easier for the few people leaving here (nearly nobody is here all year long), to reach the place and reduce their isolation. Of course this has mostly reduced the remote and detached from the bustle and noise of civilization charm of the village.
In about one hour you reach the village of Monteviasco, hermit and a splendid example of true mountain village built entirely of stone. There you can find accommodation and food and from it you can take numerous interesting routes in the surrounding mountains.
