Refuge Giogo Lungo
Introduction
Escursion that, especially at the beginning of the season, takes place in a landscape of great spectacle, between huge mountains, flowering meadows and beautiful streams and waterfalls ... The route enters the most northerly part of South Tyrol and has the advantage of offering to the hiker a complete view of the tops of the border as well as the full path of two of the most beautiful side valleys of Aurina, beautifully secluded, isolated from the confusion and full of roaring waters, plants, flowers and animals of a truly extraordinary. The colorful blooms are truly the delight of the photographer. A "first class" walk, never boring and very rewarding. The recommended way provides the climb from the Valley of the Wind and the descent from the Red Valley. The plateau of Red pasture is one of the most beautiful in the Alps, the abandoned mines of copper, of which, during the descent suddenly you notice a number of inputs, are a heritage of great interest. In Predoi (Prettau) you can visit the old mines with an organized tour, and at Cadipietra (Steinhaus), further south in the direction of Brunico in the Ahrntal, you can stop at the dedicated Museum full of recording of history, testimonials and iconography.
At the beginning of the season, usually until early July is still easy to find a lot of snow on the course. In this case, the trip becomes a big "hike" where might be useful the use of ice axes, in particular for the final stretch to/from the refuge.
Descrizione
Starting from Kasern let's walk along a delightful road between pastures in order to reach Pratomagno, small village in view of the head of Ahrntal. The road continues going right across the river near a church (signals, take on the right the nr. 12) and starts to climb in the vague Valley of the Wind where, early in the season, there is an extraordinary flowering of rhododendrons and herds of marmots can be easily seen. It passes near some huts, runs on a chaotic step (often still encumbered with snow, avalanches residual of spring) and reach a first fine grassy plain, furrowed by the tranquil waters of the stream. It is a must to stop here a moment and look at the side of the valley on the left, steep and rocky, but whose slopes are, between June and July, reddened by the bright color of the rhododendrons. The following two other steps with roaring waterfalls alternated with pleasant plans are overcome aiming towards the head of the valley with sharp peaks. After reaching the level of the second largest waterfall climbing up a steep hill, turn right and take to rise more strongly to the south (from here the yards of the flags at the Refuge can be already seen), and through snowy fields and screes for debris, you gain the saddle that divides the two valleys, discovering the building of the refuge almost at the last moment. And suddenly too, great and majestic, the Pizzo Rosso of Predoi appears, noble mountain of elegant shapes, covered with ice. The view is gorgeous.
The descent follows the line of sight of the Red Valley always in sight of the Pizzo Rosso. It descends gradually, continuing to move towards the south, first to the coast and always among debris, high over the river in the valley very severe at first, then with a steeper descent to the place, always with the background of Pizzo Rosso, to the plain rich of water at the end of which stands the Red pasture (Rot Alm 2118m). The crossing of this beautiful plateau is a truly rewarding experience. Go beyond some abandoned and crumbled huts and, at the end of the plan, overcome other buildings where, during summer, hospitality and refreshments are offered. From here the trail starts to descend, touches a cross on top and falls steeply to the village of Casere (Kasern) through a beautiful forest and the area occupied by interesting old abandoned copper mines. Some tables illustrate the history of these mines.
