Gols
Introduction
This itinerary has either a huge naturalistic relevance and an historical and cultural point of view relative to the peasant heritage typical of the Puster Tal too. As a matter of fact along it it is possible to see and visit old watermills, many of them still working and watch the curious "Ground Pyranides" which grew up in consequence of the overflowing of a torrent during a big storm in 1837. The mills are sattered all over a ggreen and romantic slope: they exploit the water which are canalized from the Terenter brook (Terenten, derives precisely from the latin word"Torrentum" that means “impulsive torrent”).
Description
On the "Sonnestrasse" a little after the hotel Terenterhof, a path starts, (marked with nr. 2) going up through a little wood (many boards are illustrating the route) continuing then in a moderate slope on the meadows till it reaches a country road nearby a "maso" (Refreshment stand) At the altitude of 1350 m. circa, looking at the right of the slope you can admire the zone where the curious "Ground Pyramides" stand. The road contnues meeting, one after the other, sevral mills, very well maintained: their characteristics and working way are showed in special explanatoiry notes on tables. The road ends a little further near a fountain at an altitude of 1430 m. You take then a track (direction SE) crossing the torrent on a wooden bridge and going on becoming again wide and natural roadbed overlooking the Pustertal with its background framed by the dolomitic tops of the Odle, Sass de Putia and Sasso della Croce with the rut of Va lBadia (Gadertal). When the road starts a descent in direction of Terenten, a new narrow path come off on the left (nr. 8A), gains height with some bends and leads to a new road similar to the previous one. This road developes partially in the wood, partially crossing open fields and continues the regular slope until it reaches an obvious junction whose left branch leads to the Engl Alm. Neglecting this branch, and continuing horizontally some minutes long on the track nr. 8, you arrive at the broad and idyllic basin of Gols (1745m) where the slope is terminated. It is really worth pausing in this fresh, restful place, opened on extensive horizons, before starting the descent that very steeply goes round a wooden rib and then pointing at the Winnebachtal which is then reached nearby the Malga Astnerberg (another erefreshment stand) and finding at its end the path nr. 23 coming directly from Terenten. (see, from the same author, the excursion to Rifugio Lago Pausa – Monte Gruppo). Walking background the valley you arrive before at the Parking site (altitude 1425 m.) and then, all along an asphalted road, on the Sonnestrasse, 1 km. afterthe starting point of the trip.
