Introduction

The Travenanzes Valley is one of the most wonderful of the Eastern Dolomites. The unspoilt nature, the landscape of rugged mountains, the geological shape and the memories of the Great War make it a place full of interest where the hiker can find satisfaction and fulfillment through a perfect network of well marked trails. The possible variations are many and allow you to reach out the Dolomite groups within which the valley, like a Grand Canyon is carved. The culmination of the Valley, Fork Col dei Bos is not far from the great road of the Dolomites and the Falzaregopass. Here, at the Castelletto, rocky forepart of the Tofana de Rozes, are impressive examples dating from the First World War. The effects of the outbreak of the great mine of July, 11th 1916, which shattered the seat of the Castelletto, are still visible. Quite nearly intact as are many war manufactures in the area. In the lower part, after leaving behind the Tofane and the Fanis group, the valley is shrinking and is enhanced by vegetation. The Travenanzes Hut (1965 m) is a good place to stop during the hike, while not difficult, it is very long. To enjoy all the wild beauty of the Travenanzes valley you should choose a time outside the peak summer periods when the attendance of these paths is even over. The month of June may be considered the ideal time.

Description

From the clearing of Ra Nona, behind the building, you go to take the path (signs) that, with moderate and steady climb in a sparse forest, climb up the mountainside to reach the wide dirt track that rises from the Military Road starting a few miles before of our starting point. Following this road, wide and comfortable and after attending a short tunnel, continue, with more pronounced slope (many short cuts) pointing to the Tofana Rozes, whose imposing wall is discovering at the sight. After a few turns leave on the right the path that leads to the Refuge Dibona, and follow the trail nr. 412, penetrating in a vast and barren circus right at the base of the Castelletto, forepart of the Tofana, and continuing through residues of the works of war to the Fork Col dei Bos (2331 m) in a rugged and very impressive scenario. From here the Travenanzes Valley offers a spectacular overview: it looks like a grand canyon, sinking between the rocky chains direction north-east, between the soaring walls of the lock up Tofane on the right and the Mount of Laguazoi with the group of Fanis on left high and dry rather than green meadows and woods beyond. A little further along is the source of the Rio Travenanzes, flowing with small waterfalls between rocks and boulders which shelter numerous marmots. Just after the fork there is a new crossroads. Take here the path No. 404 which leads into the valley and departing from the stream descends in a grand and solitary environment. The route is pleasant, never dull and difficult. Leave to the another path which leads to Refuge Giussani using the "Scale Menighel", short but steep trail facilities (marked path No. 403) (see excursion Tofana de Rozes) and continues along impressive side of detritus, finding the first trees, meadows towards the place where stands the Travenanzes Cason (1965 m). It can be reached where the path 404 flows into the track which is marked with trail no. 401 which comes from Lagazuoi. Here you can stop enjoying an idyllic and delicious place having available a source for drinking too.
Continuing the descent, keeping always on the right watershed, the wooded valley, but now more closer and sometimes carved in the rock, proceed with a more pronounced curve to the north-east and passes through some rubble, still rocks along vertical plunge from which fresh waterfalls are falling.
The track goes more out on the right side of the valley with flatter side of the great covering screes that form the bed of the stream. walking along them, and then crossing the river you arrive on the opposite side where the trail descends again among the clumps of trees up to recross the river at the mouth of the canyon in the place called "In Po Ra Ola". From here the trail no. 401 continues to a clearing and turns into a dirt road leading to the road Alemagna (Cortina - Dobbiaco) in the surroundings of the starting track that goes up to Ra Stua. In the excursion described here, however, we leave the wake of Val Travenanzes and follow the path no 408, which, very steep, leads through a very dense forest, to the fork Posporcora (1720 m) that connects the Boite Valley with the Travenanzes valley. This trail descends on a comfortable wide hairpin turns rapidly losing altitude and heading to the valley where the Boite stream flows impetuous. To cross it we must take the dirt track up the valley near the Camp Olympia. From here, a few hundred meters down the road, you return to the Hotel Fiames.
