The Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden reopens on Saturday 13 June: Gran Paradiso National Park and the Fondation Grand Paradis present the new features for summer 2009
The Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden, owned by the Gran Paradiso National Park, which oversees its infrastructure and botanical-scientific aspects, whilst its tourism and promotional management is entrusted to the Fondation Grand Paradis, is ready to welcome visitors. To mark the summer reopening on Saturday 13 June, admission will be free.
The garden, founded in July 1955 and situated in the splendid setting of Valnontey in Cogne, is home to around 1,000 plant species from the Alps and other mountain ranges around the world. This yearâs exceptional winter, characterised by cold weather and heavy snowfall which blanketed the garden from early November to early May with a maximum depth of 2.50 metres and a total of 7.74 metres of snow on the ground, will allow all visitors to enjoy a delayed flowering of the herbaceous vegetation caused by a later awakening of nature, protected by low temperatures and early and late frosts.
New features in this summerâs exhibition include updated educational panels and an even more extensive section dedicated to medicinal plants. The Fondation Grand Paradis, in collaboration with the Parkâs guides, offers guided tours lasting approximately one hour every morning and afternoon. But this year there are also themed activities for adults, such as â1 honey ⊠1,000 flowersâ, a guided tasting session to learn about the characteristics and properties of honey; activities for children entitled âThe Honey Factoryâ, a fairy tale designed to introduce children to the world of bees and flowers; âThe World of Treesâ, identifying trees by observing the various parts of the plant; âFlutteringâ, to learn about butterflies; and âMusic in the Parkâ, the creation
of a small orchestra using materials found in the woodland; and for everyone, âWhat Plants Tell Usâ, an activity to identify medicinal and wild plants found in the garden and learn about their uses in cooking and folk medicine.
