. This morning the 32nd edition of the Transcavallo started on the snows of the Alpago, specifically in Col Indes. The team ski mountaineering race, organised by the Dolomiti Ski-Alp Ski Club, was characterised in the first stage by bad weather, poor visibility at high altitude, wind and a light snowfall along the entire route.
. A few minutes before the start, the managers of the Piancavallo sector had to clear the ridge of Mount Tremol due to the strong wind blowing at altitude. The rest of the route, having heard all the controllers, was confirmed as planned, so about 1700 metres of altitude difference diluted in three climbs.
On the first climb, which touched Casera Palantina and the forks on the border with the Piancavallo ski complex, world champions Lenzi and Eydallin took the lead. Behind them were two other athletes from the Centro Sportivo Esercito, Michele Boscacci and Manfred Reichegger. Tadei Pivk and Denis Trento climbed further back into third position. Just behind Martin Weisskopf and Filippo Beccari, in fifth position was Davide Pierantoni teamed with Michael Moling.
Among the women it was the two pairs formed by Elena Nicolini, Laura Besseghini and Martina Valmassoi, Katia Tomatis who took the lead.
The first stage of the Transcavallo was decided on the last descent when the competitors, having crossed the ridge of Monte Guslon, plunged towards the finish line at Col Indes. Michele Boscacci and Manfred Reichegger came out of the last changeover first, the Verbier champions, Lenzi and Eydallin launched themselves in pursuit of the outriders and shortly afterwards gained the first position.
The two Azzurri of the Centro Sportivo Esercito, Lenzi-Eydallin, crossed the finish line with a time of 1:52'07''. Boscacci-Reichegger, after losing precious seconds for leaving the ideal downhill line, confirmed their second position with a time of 1:54'10''. On the third step of the podium were Denis Trento and Tadei Pivk, stopping the clock at 1:55'33''.
Among women Elena Nicolini and Laura Besseghini put the first stage of the Transcavallo in the archives with 2:26'37 gaining 33'' on Katia Tomatis and Martina Valmassoi. In third place were Cecilia De Filippo and Birgit Stuffer.
As far as Sunday morning's stage is concerned, those in charge of the course are currently evaluating the various possibilities, but only tomorrow morning in the early hours of the morning will they decide on the final route.
