Filippo Beccari and Filippo Barazzuol win the 66th Parravicini Trophy. In the women's field Carlotta Cortese and Paola Pezzoli dominate on the snow of the Rifugio Calvi.
This morning in the amphitheatre of the Calvi Refuge, a few kilometres above the town of Carona (Brembana Valley) in the province of Bergamo, the 66th edition of the Trofeo Parravicini was run, a race that is valid as the last round of the Orobic Alps Cup.
The Trophy, which represents the history of ski mountaineering, is organised by Sci Cai Bergamo in collaboration with the Carona Municipality and the local Pro Loco.
The route managers coordinated by Luca Pirola, who had already been present in the hollow of the mountain hut for a few days, had impeccably prepared the original route. Unfortunately, the athletes were unable to fully enjoy the beauty of the route because on the hollow of the mountain hut, on the Madonnino and on the Cabianca the low clouds greatly limited visibility.
The race course, only modified in the first part with the elimination of the climb to Grabiasca, had an altitude difference of 1600 metres spread over five climbs for a total of 14 kilometres. A technical and fun route that included the conquest of Mount Madoninno and the summit of Cabianca, symbolic places of the Alta Val Brembana.
Immediately after the start, Filippo Beccari and Filippo Barazzuol took the lead of the race, behind them the pair formed by Fabio Pasini and Richard Tiraboschi climbed keeping the two outriders in their sights, just behind Norman Gusmini and Matteo Bigotti. In the women's field Carlotta Cortese and Paola Pezzoli at the end of the first climb are already in the lead.
Beccari-Barazzuol continue their ride, while the mountains overlooking the basin of the Calvi hut are still hidden in the clouds, a few minutes behind the pairs Pasini-Tiraboschi and Gusmini-Bigotti.
In the third climb, which ended with the conquest of the Cabianca summit, Beccari-Barazzuol were still first, with about two minutes behind Pasini-Tiraboschi. In third position with an eight-minute disadvantage was the pair Gusmini-Bigotti. In the spectacular descent of the north channel of the Cabianca no team had any particular problems and so the positions did not change.
In the women's field Carlotta Cortese and Paola Pezzoli did not give up the first position.
Beccari-Barazzuol after tackling the two short climbs flew down the last descent crossing the finish line with a time of 1:47'30'', Fabio Pasini and Richard Tiraboschi confirmed their second position with a time of 1:50'22. The very young Matteo Bigotti and Norman Gusmini took the third step of the podium with a time of 1:58'36''. Mattia and Filippo Curtoni and Marzio Bondioli paired with Riccardo Donati were fourth and fifth respectively.
The women's race ended with Carlotta Cortese and Paola Pezzoli crossing the finish line with raised hands in a time of 2:55'04''.
In Carona, this 66th edition also goes into the archives. For the fourth year in a row the sun did not show above the Rifugio Calvi, but neither organisers nor participants were intimidated by the adverse weather conditions and competed along the original route, which carries on the tradition of ski mountaineering in the most romantic sense of the word.
