With only a week to go before the start of the 5th edition of the Ultrabericus Trail, Vicenza is preparing for a new invasion by the approximately 1,000 registered participants in the now famous event in the Berici Hills.
Awaiting them will be 65 km and 2,500 m D+ all to savour among mule tracks, paths and open meadows. The reconnaissance and cleaning of the route has again this year resulted in a route that will leave you speechless. It will be run anti-clockwise with the start at 10.00 a.m. on 14 March next.
Between the two columns of Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza, the public will then be able to experience the first arrivals at around 16.00, after which it will be the usual pleasant parade of fans who will cross the finish line until 23.00.
In addition to being an early-season classic, Ultrabericus is for everyone a sort of "eulogy of fatigue", a real attraction for hundreds of trail running enthusiasts who will meet in Vicenza to experience unparalleled emotions as always.
Such a large parterre could not fail to make several top runners' mouths water, and in 2015 too there will be no shortage of top names.
As far as the men's race is concerned, the Hungarian from the Mammuth Pro Team, Csaba Nemeth, 6 times winner of the Lavaredo Ultra Trail, among the top 8 at the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc and third on the European podium at the 2013 Trans d'Havet, is expected at the starting gate. In fact, he will have to contend with the tenacious Ivan Geronazzo, a member of the Alpstation Trail Team and the first Italian in 2014 to cross the finish line of two of the most important ultra in our country: the Lavaredo Ultra Trail and the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. The name of another athlete who will be at the start of the Ultrabericus, Filippo Canetta, also emerges from the top 20 of the 2014 Lavaredo. For Team Salomon there will be the young Davide Cheraz, who only last year closed the Berici race in sixth place and who in recent weeks has certainly not slowed down his training, even allowing himself some running in the snow and a good second place at the Eco Winter Trail in Courmayeur. Team New Balance will bet on Matteo Lucchese, while for Vibram there will be Beppe Marazzi. Eyes will also be on the Russian and Italian by adoption, Michail Mamleev who will wear the colours of the Valetudo Skyrunning Team, a past as a strong skyrunner for him, now lent to the world of blue orienteering.
Defending the home colours, as well as those of the Alpstation Trail Team, is Mirko Righele. Finally, Compressport Italia's Valdostan Fabrizio Roux will certainly not be a comprimario up there.
As far as the pink race is concerned, the challenge already seen in the past between Federica Boifava (Team Montura) and Maria Chiara Parigi (Team Tecnica) will be repeated. Last year Boifava had beaten off her opponents in the Ultrabericus house, placing herself at the top of the women's ranking, with more than half an hour's lead over her direct pursuer Lisa Borzani, and even in 10th place overall. Maria Chiara Parigi (Team Tecnica) is also no stranger to the circumnavigation of the Berici. Here, in fact, the blonde Tuscan had triumphed in 2013. In the 2014 season, she strung together important successes on the trail and ultra trail front, stringing together victories at the Trail delle Valli Etrusche, the Ultra Trail dei Monti Cimini, the Trail del Golfo dei Poeti, the Ultra Trail del Lago d'Orta, and last but not least the Trail del Cinghiale.
Last but not least, as they say, we must not lose sight of the crews that will take part in the Twin Team He&She relay race, 'splitting' the course into a no less demanding 32+33 km. At the start will be last year's winners, Lara Mustat and Gianluca Cola of Forrest Group. The runner-up in the 2014 women's complete race, Lisa Borzani, will compete again this year in a relay version with her adventure companion Paolo Pajaro (Team Vibram), 4th in the 2014 Ultrabericus pairs race. Among the other couples to be marked closely because they will certainly arrive more fierce than ever at the appointment in Piazza dei Signori, we will find again the Vicenza-based Anna Zilio with Diego Dall'Amico and Tiziana Scorzato with Remo Lavarda, flanked by the Treviso duo of Silvia Serafini and Michele Lazzari.
Everything is therefore ready for the kick-off. The event will also see the partnership with Radio Vicenza, which will follow the event live until the start and with some later connections during the day for updates directly from the track.
