Fritz Wintersteller, an Austrian mountaineer, was born in Innsbruck on 21 October 1927. He was part of the Austrian Alpine Club expedition which, on 9 June 1957, made the first ascent of Broad Peak (8,051 m) in the Karakoram, alongside Marcus Schmuck, Hermann Buhl and Kurt Diemberger: the four climbed without supplementary oxygen or high-altitude porters, applying the Alpine style to an eight-thousander for the first time.
