On 27 June 1957, Buhl and Diemberger managed to reach the summit of Chogolisa, but were caught in a sudden, heavy snowstorm; things went even worse on their descent along the mountain’s eastern ridge. Buhl suddenly disappeared from view after breaking through a snow cornice on one of the mountain’s dangerous snow ledges on the steep north face of Chogolisa. His body was never found.
