On 23 February 1933, Ottorino Mezzalama, a mountaineer from Bologna regarded as one of the pioneers of ski mountaineering in Italy, died in an avalanche whilst returning from a ski mountaineering trip. The Mezzalama Trophy, one of the world’s most important ski-mountaineering competitions, is named after him.
