On 30 October 1954, Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy reached the summit of Chomo Lonzo (7,790 m) for the first time. The French mountaineers reached the summit via the south-western ridge, which starts at Sakietang La, a pass at an altitude of 7,200 m between Chomo Lonzo and Makalu.
