On 19 April 1863, 35 people gathered in Olten, in the canton of Solothurn, and founded the Swiss Alpine Club in the station buffet. Rudolf Theodor Simler (1833–1873), a lecturer in chemistry and geology at the University of Bern and the driving force behind the initiative, was elected as the first president. By the end of 1863, there were eight sections and 257 members.
