On 8 April 1902, Andrew Irvine, a British mountaineer and explorer known for the 1924 Everest expedition in which he lost his life alongside his climbing partner George Mallory, was born in Birkenhead. His body was never found. There have been many theories about this story; some claim that they were the first people to climb Everest, and there have been numerous publications on the subject.
