Introduction

Municipality in the upper Aosta Valley, located at the entrance to the Valgrisenche valley. It was probably already inhabited in pre-Roman times, but it was probably the latter who consolidated its existence by building a 'mansio', i.e. a resting place for travellers following the road to Gaul in the direction of what is now the Petit St Bernard pass.

It was probably already inhabited in pre-Roman times, but it was probably the latter who consolidated its existence by building a "mansio", i.e. a resting place for travellers following the road to Gaul in the direction of what is now the Petit St. Bernard Pass.
According to tradition, the commune's territory was the scene of clashes with Saracen invaders in the 10th century: several castles and fortifications were built, the ruins of which we can today admire or later reconstructions (La Mothe, Rochefort, Montmayeur, Planaval). Arvier certainly played a part in the war between France and Savoy in 1792, as it is located on the road leading to the Col du Mont, the point of contact between Valgrisenche and Val d'Isère. Many of its inhabitants were enlisted in the Savoy forces as fighters or as supply officers.
The municipality is also home to the nature reserve of Lake Lolair, at an altitude of 1175 metres.
Economically, the municipality is now closely linked to the regional capital, where most of its inhabitants go to work every day. Of the old agricultural vocation, the wine-growing sector survives, thanks to the production of the renowned Enfer wine.
