Introduction

Canosio is a small municipality in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont, located at an altitude of 1,323 metres in the upper part of the Maira Valley. The village lies on a wide panoramic terrace surrounded by pastures and woods, at the foot of some of the most spectacular peaks of the Cottian Alps, such as Rocca la Meja. Its position, isolated but suggestive, and the intact environmental context make it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity, nature and authentic alpine landscapes. The history of Canosio is closely linked to the pastoral and agricultural tradition of the valley, with documented medieval origins, although finds and place names testify to earlier human habitation.

Description

The municipal territory is mountainous and very extensive in relation to the population, which numbers a few dozen permanent residents. It includes scattered hamlets, mountain pastures and extensive meadow and woodland areas, as well as Alpine lakes and areas of great natural interest. The views are dominated by the dolomite forms of Rocca la Meja, a popular excursion destination, and the grassy ridges that open up towards the valley. The climate is typically alpine, with long, snowy winters and short but cool summers.

The earliest historical records document Canosio as a fief of the Marquises of Saluzzo, later passing under various local lordships. The village has maintained a traditional architectural structure, with stone houses and slate roofs, and preserves buildings of interest such as the parish church of San Lorenzo, of medieval origin and remodelled over the centuries, and some country chapels. Community life was historically marked by the rhythm of the seasons, with the summer transhumance to the alpine pastures and the processing of dairy products.

Today's economy is mainly based on livestock farming and agritourism, with a growing focus on hiking tourism. The production of mountain cheeses, honey and other local specialities remains a distinctive feature, along with wood and stone craftsmanship. Tourism has gained importance in recent years, thanks to the numerous itineraries that depart from the village towards hills, Alpine lakes and panoramic peaks.

The culture and traditions of Canosio are linked to patronal festivals, religious celebrations and festivals dedicated to typical products. A special event is the 'Festa dell'Escursionista' (Hiker's Festival), which enhances the valley's network of trails and its popularity. The local cuisine offers simple and hearty dishes, such as polenta, barley and legume soups, and meat from local farms.

In terms of tourism, Canosio is a privileged starting point for excursions to Rocca la Meja, the Colle del Preit, the Roburent lakes and the Gardetta trails, a plateau of extraordinary geological and landscape interest. In winter the area is frequented by snowshoers and ski mountaineers, while in summer it offers opportunities for trekking, mountain biking and climbing. The tranquillity of the hamlet and the beauty of the views make it a niche destination, appreciated by those seeking authentic experiences.
