Introduction

Daverio is a municipality in the province of Varese, Lombardy, nestled in the hilly landscape of the Valbossa, a few kilometres from Lake Varese. It has about 3,050 inhabitants, known as Daveriesi, and rises to an average altitude of 328 metres above sea level.

Description

The territory of Daverio, characterised by wooded areas and gentle hills, preserves traces of a very ancient human presence: in the nearby Pustenga marsh, remains of prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements have been found, while in Roman times the place was home to a small village probably linked to the 'de Verris' family, from which the current place name may derive. The parish church, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, stands on the same spot where a temple dedicated to Mercury once stood, evidence of a pagan cult that was later transformed into a Christian one.
Throughout the centuries, the village gravitated around the noble families of the Sessa and Bossi families, who wielded power and influence over the centres of the Valbossa. Today Daverio retains a quiet, residential appearance, but its productive fabric retains a certain vibrancy: the local economy is based on small and medium-sized industrial activities, especially in mechanics, packaging and hose production, alongside artisan and dairy businesses that perpetuate ancient food traditions.
The municipality's cultural life is animated by community events linked to the parish church, sports initiatives (Polisportiva Daverio is active in basketball and oratorial disciplines) and local events celebrating typical products and the agricultural seasons. The surrounding natural environment offers easy hiking and cycling opportunities. The hilly position makes it possible to reach in just a few minutes the cycle path around Lake Varese, which is 28 km long and full of scenic spots and rest areas. Other places of natural and cultural interest are also easily accessible from Daverio, such as Isolino Virginia, a UNESCO site for prehistoric pile-dwelling remains, the Sacro Monte of Varese and the shores of Lake Monate.
