The classic itinerary for the ascent starts at Pian del Re (2,020m), the heart of the Monviso Park and a place known for hosting the sources of the Po. The first section crosses a sequence of lakes (Fiorenza and Chiaretto) and runs along marked trails that alternate between earthy and rocky stretches. Past the Colle di Viso (2,655m), we follow a track between scree and rocks that becomes steeper and, in some places, not very evident, advising caution especially in case of fog. The presence of residual snowfields until late in the season may require caution or suitable equipment. The route, although devoid of technical difficulties, requires training and familiarity with the high-altitude environment. In winter, Viso Mozzo is also a destination for ski mountaineering, with a descent on the north-east and south-west sections; these sections are exposed to risks typical of the season (winddrifts, avalanches), so it is essential to assess conditions beforehand.

Introduction

The Viso Mozzo (3,019m), located in the upper Po valley at the foot of Monviso's east face, represents one of the best known and most recognisable viewpoints in the Cottian Alps, even though it is characterised as a 'little brother' to the nearby Monviso. Its strategic position within the Monviso Park allows for a 360-degree view ranging from the alpine lakes below, such as the Fiorenza, Chiaretto, Lausetto and Lago Grande di Viso, to the Saluzzo plain and an impressive stretch of the surrounding alpine chain. The summit is recognisable by a stylised white cross and a statue of the Madonna, which also emphasise the affection of the local communities.

Description

Mountaineering on Viso Mozzo is divided between demanding hikes and climbs of medium difficulty: the normal route from the south-west face is classified as hiking (E), but the north face and the north-east ribs offer routes of difficulty D-, while the various bell-towers on the slope offer climbing routes with difficulties of TD, D and AD respectively. These routes represent an interesting technical challenge and are also visited by roped parties from abroad, attracted by the spectacular nature of the environment and the variety of the climbing routes.
The name 'Viso Mozzo' derives from its physiognomy, which seen from the north appears as a 'Monviso cut in half', hence the term 'mozzo', evoking the image of a severed peak. There are no known episodes or legends linked to this peak, but its panoramic and easily accessible position makes it a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers of different nationalities, contributing to a tradition of international attendance since the 19th century.
Historical information on the first ascents is scarce, as it is a peak of predominantly excursionist interest and frequently used as a viewpoint since ancient times, although systematic ascents and technical climbing itineraries have developed in more recent times, especially since the second half of the 20th century. The peak has no evidence of any particular exploits or mountaineering records, but its naturalistic integrity and its role as an observation terrace on the eastern face of Monviso give it a specific relevance in the local culture and imagination of the Cottian Alps.
The climb to Viso Mozzo is recommended in the summer months, from June to September, while the environment can become severe in the cold season due to the presence of ice and snow accumulations. The main road access is from Crissolo to Pian del Re with the possibility of paid parking (usually in summer). The main support point is the Quintino Sella Refuge (2640 m), located just beyond the Colle di Viso, in a strategic position for ascents in the area; there are no bivouacs on the normal ascent route. The signposting along the route is good in summer, but tends to disappear in the upper stony sections.
