Giovanni Gnifetti Hut
Introduction
The first hut was built in 1876 by the Alagna Valsesia guide Giuseppe Guglielmina, and was named after the first climber of the Signalkuppe, the parish priest of Alagna Valsesia Giovanni Gnifetti, who made the first ascent on 9 August 1842. A first restoration was carried out in 1880, followed by a second in 1886. The development of mountaineering on a large scale convinced the CAI section of Varallo to carry out further interventions such as the creation of a shelf to build the new building (1907). Before and after the war there were extensions and innovations such as the advent of electricity thanks to a generator (1950) and a telephone service thanks to a radio bridge (1962). In 1965, the Punta Indren cable car was inaugurated, which gave further development to mountaineering activity. In recent years, there was a final extension in 1981, which brought the hut to its current size; in addition, the hut was equipped with solar thermal panels to obtain water from melting snow. Today, it is an important support point for the large number of mountaineers who climb the massif every summer. The large number of places makes it certainly not suitable for those seeking a little peace and quiet before their ascent.
