Introduction

The lake owes its name to the presence of soapstone in the area, with which 'pine cones', the granddaddy of cheap stoves, were made. Soapstone is a layered, black stone that has the ability to absorb heat and disperse it slowly. The same stone was used to make pots and pans, the 'pignatte'. People used to climb up here, load up with blocks weighing about 50 kg, and descend to the valley for processing.
