Introduction
The Oratory of Blessed Emeric is a charming place of worship located in the municipality of Quart, Aosta Valley, Italy. Also known as the Hermitage of the Blessed Emeric, this small sanctuary is located at an altitude of about 1,150 metres, in the locality of Saint-Émeric, within the picturesque Valsainte, or 'holy valley'.
Description
The oratory itself is a small stone-clad chapel with a double-pitched roof. Inside, a simple stone altar is surmounted by a wooden cross and a statue of Blessed Emeric. The structure exudes an aura of simplicity and recollection, perfectly integrated into its natural surroundings.
The history of the oratory is closely linked to the figure of Blessed Emeric of Quart, born in the local castle in the mid-13th century. Son of the nobleman Giacomo II, Emerico studied theology and, once back in the Aosta Valley, chose to retire to this secluded place to devote himself to prayer and contemplation. Tradition has it that the imprints of his knees, left during intense prayer sessions, are still visible on some rocks near the oratory.
After his hermitic period, Emeric became bishop of Aosta in 1302, a position he held until his death in 1313. His spiritual dedication and pastoral commitment earned him popular veneration, culminating in his official beatification in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII.
The oratory is accessible throughout the year and is an ideal destination for those who wish to combine a spiritual experience with a pleasant hike in nature. There are no entrance fees or specific visiting times, making the place freely accessible to pilgrims and hikers.
Recently, restoration work has been undertaken to preserve the integrity of the oratory and enhance its enjoyment. In addition, the oratory is included in tourist and religious itineraries that include visits to Quart Castle and other places of historical and cultural interest in the area.
