Adamello Park

Introduction
The park, located in the centre of the Rhaetian Alps, extends over an area of approximately 51,000 hectares in the north-eastern sector of the province of Brescia, covering the entire Lombardy side of the Adamello massif. This protected area, together with the two neighbouring parks of Adamello Brenta and Stelvio, creates a protection area of considerable importance at a European level.
Description
The Adamello mountain group is home to the largest glacier in Italy, which, in the presence of impermeable granite rocks, makes the park area particularly rich in springs and watercourses. The park stretches from 390m to 3500m altitude. It therefore presents an extraordinary variety of environments: mixed deciduous forests, chestnut groves, forest formations of spruce, larch and pine, expanses of heathland, hay meadows and pastures. The fauna is very rich and has typically alpine connotations. Mammals include the chamois, ibex, deer, roe deer, variable hare, ermine and marmot; diurnal birds of prey include the golden eagle and the goshawk; nocturnal birds of prey include the eagle owl and the little owl.
In the valley bottom, the villages are home to important architectural sites such as the ancient medieval village of Niardo and the Longobard castle of Cimbergo. The human presence in these territories is very ancient. This is testified by the extraordinary iconographic documentation of the rock engravings found in Valcamonica, dating from 10,000 years BC to the 1st century BC. An extensive network of hiking trails runs through the park, and the numerous rocky ridges provide an environment of considerable interest to mountaineers.
