Bruno Piazza Refuge
Introduction
The work to transform an old, abandoned mountain hut very close to the climbing gym into a refuge began in 1989. The refuge was inaugurated on 25 October 1992 and was dedicated to Bruno Piazza, president of the Ivrea Section of the C.A.I. and soul of the entire project, who died in the mountains during an excursion. The rock walls at 'Balma Bianca' were discovered in 1952 by some mountaineers from Ivrea. Subsequently, the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) Ivrea Section began to use this place for its climbing courses, equipping new routes and developing the 'gym' concept. At the beginning of the 1990s, there were already 35 climbing routes, but the real turning point came in 1992, with the opening of Rif. Piazza, which led to the development of hundreds of new routes and the inauguration, in October 1998, of the 'Settore delle Speranze', a wall entirely equipped for children, unique in the entire Alpine arc in terms of size and characteristics.
