Villa Lake Reserve

Introduction
The Lake Villa nature reserve, located in Challand Saint-Victor, is an oasis of biodiversity set in a landscape characteristic of the middle and lower altitudes of the Aosta Valley. Established in 1992, this reserve is distinguished by the protection of one of the region's rare lake environments, set in an environmental context dominated by arid slopes rich in geological history.
Description
The basin that hosts the lake is of glacial origin and shows outcrops of rocks belonging to the greenstone group, vestiges of an ancient ocean floor that was transformed by pressure and heat during the formation of the Alpine chain. This geological past gives the place a unique charm, interweaving natural history and scenic beauty.
The lake's ecosystem is fed by an underground water table and surrounded by chestnut and oak forests, interrupted here and there by meadows that tell of an agricultural past now in decline. The shores of the lake have a rich vegetal stratification: from the willows, alders and poplars along the shores, to the strip of reeds dominated by the marsh reed, to the stretches of water where the rare white water lily blooms, accompanied by the amphibious polygonum. In the peaty surroundings, species such as the fibrous clover and the sundew, a small carnivorous plant, contribute to the ecological variety.
The dry grasslands in the north-western part of the reserve are a valuable habitat for wild orchids and other plant species adapted to extreme conditions. This complex of diverse environments is a refuge for many forms of life: common birds such as the Robin coexist with more elusive species such as the Nuthatch, while amphibians such as the Common Toad and the Green Frog find an important breeding site in the lake.
The reserve, part of the Natura 2000 network, is recognised as a Special Area of Conservation for its extraordinary naturalistic value. Lake Villa invites you to discover a fascinating microcosm, where nature and geology meet to tell stories of adaptation and continuity, in a place that deserves to be explored with respect and curiosity.
