Piergiorgio Frassati Refuge
Introduction
Description
The shelter has been open since July 2012. Construction work began in 2008 by the Operazione Mato Grosso youths, a movement of young people from all over Italy, who worked for free for three summers until the inauguration in 2011. The transport of the necessary materials was done almost entirely on the shoulders of the young people, who donated one or more weeks of their summer holidays to the construction of the refuge. In keeping with the OMG spirit of adventure and essentiality, they spent the weeks working using the Tza di Merdeux alpine pasture, located a 45-minute walk below the refuge, as their base camp. Operation Mato Grosso has already completed the construction of another refuge in Valle d'Aosta, the Rifugio degli Angeli (2916m) in Valgrisenche.
The refuge is run by volunteers. All the proceeds from its management go to support projects in the missions of Operation Mato Grosso in Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Ecuador.
The refuge was dedicated to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died at the age of 24 from fulminating polio. Pier Giorgio, besides being a mountain lover, spent his energies in his short life on behalf of the poor and needy.
