The large stone building was built on the ruins of the old military barracks on the Losas hill, which in 1950 was granted in usufruct to the Saluzzo section of the CAI, which in 1952 entrusted it to the Barge section. The mountain hut was dedicated in 1961 to Vitale Giacoletti, mountaineer, founder of the Barge section of the Italian Alpine Club and tragically died during a climb on the Matterhorn. In 1970-71 the hut was enlarged to its current configuration. The mountain hut is located at the foot of the east ridge of punta Udine, facing the northern part of Monviso. It is the highest altitude refuge in the Cottian Alps and was built on the ruins of the old military barracks on the Losas pass. (info taken from the site www.cuneo360.it)
