Introduction

Description

Changing and unspoilt landscapes immersed in the green of sinuous valleys make Umbria a region that never ceases to amaze. It is a land predominantly of hills, mountains, hollows and valley bottoms and its territory extends over the middle Tiber basin. It is located in the heart of the boot and is the only one with no outlet to the sea; it includes Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in central Italy, in whose territory the remains of Etruscan settlements can still be found, especially in the area of Castiglione del Lago, another locality that combines the charm of the natural landscape with the romanticism and tranquillity of the lake's waters. From the waters of the two lakes, we move on to the Marmore waterfalls near Terni, considered among the most beautiful in Europe, which plunge 165 metres into the Nera river, surrounded by lush vegetation and a destination for sports enthusiasts of canoeing, kayaking and more. Also in the province of Terni, two small pearls should be pointed out to the attentive and curious tourist; one linked to history and the other to the territory. Carsulae is an ancient Roman town crossed by the ancient Via Flaminia, of which monumental public buildings have emerged, and of which the arch of San Damiano remains, where one can see a neighbouring landscape of particular beauty and suggestion. The other, closely linked to the composition of its territory, is the fossil forest of Dunarobba, a rare example of a forest that existed three million years ago, whose trunks are in an excellent state of preservation, immersed in a lunar landscape.
