On 29 May 1953, Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest (8,849 m) at 11.30 am, as part of the British expedition led by John Hunt. It was the first confirmed ascent of the mountain. The climb followed the south-east ridge, the standard route on the Nepalese side.
