On 19 October 1918, Charles Evans, a British mountaineer and surgeon, was born. As deputy leader of the 1953 Everest expedition led by John Hunt, he and Tom Bourdillon approached the summit (8,849 m) via the south-east ridge, before turning back. In 1955, he led the British expedition that made the first ascent of Kangchenjunga (8,586 m), with George Band and Joe Brown stopping just a few metres from the summit in accordance with an agreement with the government of Sikkim.
