Access

Bagnes is mainly accessible by rail, with Le Châble serving as the main transport hub. The valley can also be reached by car, following the roads that wind through the Valais, and offers tourist facilities and infrastructure suitable for welcoming visitors in both winter and summer.

Introduction

Bagnes, situated in the Canton of Valais in Switzerland, is a municipality that covers the entire valley of the same name, and is one of the largest in the country by area, covering approximately 301.91 km². On 1 January 2021, Bagnes merged with the municipality of Vollèges to form the municipality of Val de Bagnes, which now has a population of over 10,900. The municipal capital is Le Châble. It is a mountainous area rich in alpine scenery, with the Grand Combin (4,314 m) being one of its highest peaks. Bagnes is renowned for its natural attractions, such as the Mauvoisin Dam – a major feat of engineering – and for its ski resorts, such as Verbier, a famous tourist destination.

Description

Historically, the Bagnes Valley has witnessed significant events such as the Giétro Glacier disaster in 1818, when a natural ice dam caused a catastrophic flood. Over the years, the population has experienced alternating phases of growth and decline, but since the Second World War there has been a steady recovery, with an increase in the number of foreign residents, now comprising over 65 different nationalities.The area is characterised by a wealth of opportunities for hiking and nature exploration, with trails winding through alpine landscapes, mountain lakes, forests and protected areas. There are numerous routes for trekking and nature enthusiasts, ranging from the most relaxing to the most challenging, with stunning vantage points such as those in the Grand Combin massif and the Combins range. The valley also offers a range of outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, mountain biking and water sports in the surrounding areas.
