Introduction
Description
Until the 1840s, Punta Dufour was commonly referred to as the 'Gornerhorn' or 'highest peak'. Once again, the mountain was named after the general and topographer Ludwig von Welden. As a tribute to the cartographic skills of General Guillaume-Henri Dufour, and on the recommendation of renowned mountaineers and SAC members, the Federal Council decided to name the peak in his honour in 1863.
