Description

Leaving the car in the convenient car park at the side of the road, we set off along a short asphalted road over the car park itself until we come to a signpost indicating the start of our route. We turn right, heading towards the beautiful waterfall that is proposed right in front of the hiker; after a few dozen flat metres, we turn right and take the wide path of Alta Via 1. We begin to ascend the steep slope with a series of turns that immediately make us gain height as we enter the predominantly larch (Larix decidua) forest, with the presence of a few sporadic maples. After a long traverse to the right, the path zigzags its way up the steep slope until it reaches some benches in a panoramic spot (1526m, 0h15'). Past the benches, the path turns to the left, accompanied by railings: here the forest thins out, opening up splendid views of the Gressoney-Saint-Jean below. Continue further, reaching after a few minutes a beautiful stadel and shortly afterwards a small oratory: after a few dozen metres you come to a fork in the road (1600m, 0h25'): ignore the path to the left and start to climb up a stretch of beautiful mule track bordered by dry stone walls. After a few twists and turns, we reach an alpine pasture ruin sheltered by a rock (1655m, 0h35'). We cross the mountain pasture and, after skirting a small stream, take a few wide hairpin bends: above our heads appears the beautiful little village church. Cross a short wooded area again and then enter the pastures below the village; after passing a second oratory (1702m, 0h40'), proceed through the pastures until you join the old mule track: turn right and in front of us appear the characteristic Walser settlements and the picturesque appella. A few more minutes and you finally reach the village of Alpenzù and the refuge of the same name located inside the village (1779 m, 0h45').
