Description
Introduction
Mount Paillasse (2414 metres), above Rhemes Saint George, is certainly not one of the most famous hikes in the Rhemes Valley, but it is an excellent vantage point over all the 4000 metres of the Aosta Valley. The climb presents no difficulty, with a total elevation gain of about 1,200 metres.
Description of the itinerary
Almost at the end of the village of Rhemes Saint George, on the left, you will notice the signs for trail number 4 (Monte Paillasse), which invite you to take the road that climbs in the opposite direction to SR24; climb along this road to the hamlet of Vieux, where a marker indicates the start of the trail.
You begin to gain height with a straight stretch at a fairly sustained gradient until you enter the woods; the path continues to climb at a fairly sustained gradient until it crosses the dirt road that climbs up from Vieux at a pastureland that has now been abandoned (La Travèrsa); follow the dirt road for a short stretch and then, following the signs, take the path again. Go back onto the dirt track at the hamlet of Champromenty and follow it, first following a long traverse to the right and then one to the left, at the end of which you come out at the Mont Blanc pass, where there is an observation hut of the Gran Paradiso National Park.
At the pass, turn around and head for Mount Paillasse, whose summit is now clearly visible and can be reached by a very wide path that climbs up the western slope of the mountain. Just below the summit, the path narrows and begins to run along the ridge and soon reaches the summit where a wooden cross stands. Here the view sweeps across the Aosta Valley at 360°, and the following are clearly visible: Mont Blanc, Gran Paradiso, Monte Rosa, Matterhorn, Gran Combin, Monte Emilius, Becca di Nana, while below you can see the basin of Aosta.
